About Dasara in Telangana
Dasara is a major festival celebrated in Telangana with great enthusiasm and fervour. It is a ten-day long festival that marks the victory of good over evil. The festival is celebrated in the month of September or October, according to the Hindu calendar. During this festival, people decorate their houses with flowers, rangolis and lights, and offer prayers to Goddess Durga.
In Telangana, Dasara is celebrated as ‘Bathukamma Panduga’, which means festival of flowers. Women dress up in colourful sarees and perform a special dance called ‘Bathukamma’ around a flower stack made of seasonal flowers. The flower stack is also worshipped as a representation of Goddess Gauri.
On the day of Vijayadashami, which is the tenth day of the festival, people celebrate the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. They also exchange gifts and sweets with their friends and family. The day is also celebrated as ‘Ayudha Puja’ in which people worship their tools and equipment, including vehicles, to seek blessings from Goddess Saraswati.
Overall, Dasara in Telangana is a vibrant and colourful festival that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the state.
